SECIA seeking summer community garden interns

posted Feb 12, 2013, 4:53 PM by Stephanie Hankerson   [ updated Feb 19, 2013, 3:41 PM ]

SE Como's community gardens are opening up its summer internship hiring process.  Our summer interns have a pivotal role in ensuring success at our vegetable, ornamental, native and youth gardens.  The listings are shown below, but in general, we are flexible about these positions and can customize to make an opportunity to fit. We prefer interns who live in SE Minneapolis, and use this opportunity to connect the student to the local community. We offer varied work tasks, and fun! Internships are unpaid.

Fall 2012 Environmental Sustainability Intern for SECIA

posted Sep 5, 2012, 10:10 AM by Stephanie Hankerson   [ updated Sep 5, 2012, 10:27 AM ]

The Environmental Sustainability Intern will have the opportunity to work with a cutting edge, grassroots organization that has achieved measurable results in the real world. This is an opportunity to apply course work and theory to an actual neighborhood in the heart of Minneapolis. This is a great setting to affect environmental change being a residential community surrounded by a sea of industry. Our intern will have access to seasoned staff in the Twin Cities environmental movement, and also the opportunity to collaborate with neighborhood leaders, elected officials, captains of industry, and environmentally minded residents in the Como community. Specifically, this intern will work on researching information on chemicals used by the railways and how it affects the community and community gardens, while also creating a webpage about our environmental inventory for www.comogreenvillage.info. Below is a list of the variety of other tasks as well.

  • Research the chemicals used by the railroads and work with our volunteers at Como Corner and other community gardens in the area to find out what the impacts are (a list of chemicals used will be provided). Create a webpage on our Como Green Village website where information and pictures can be shared on this topic across neighborhoods
  • Help put together a historical summary of our electronic environmental inventory, which was an online inventory identifying local air polluters, and building a webpage on the topic.
  • If starting early enough, interns will assist with annual Como Cookout event on September 16th, particularly with working the organics compost station to help make it a zero waste event (free food!).
  • Work with other Como interns, the University of Minnesota  Neighborhood Liaisons and others on local foods issues and production like at the FairShare Community Farm located in the neighborhood. Or attend/assist with the fall canning classes planned for this fall.
  • Create a short biography for our newsletter and website on your study interests and how you would like apply those interests in the Como community.
  • Help track the public meeting process on the garbage incinerator downtown (HERC) and the impacts of the pollutants on urban gardening/gardeners.
  • Create a self-directed student project based on individual interests and coursework (if interested).
  • Work on other Como Green Village Projects as needed such as, community gardens, looking into ideas to make MIMO (neighborhood free store) sustainable, building recycling program ideas and other items that may be of interest to the student intern.
SECIA is looking for enthusiastic and passionate students who thrive in self-directed work environments. We appreciate interns who come up with their own ideas and bring to our organization new connections and energy. Students should be computer literate, comfortable with word processing and spreadsheet applications, along with online Google Documents & Google calendaring. Experience in webpage editing and ability to sometimes work somewhat independently and remotely is preferred. Students must show initiative and the ability to creatively solve problems. We are looking for an intern for the fall term (100-160hours) depending on course/internship requirements. We offer flexible scheduling and a unique opportunity to work in a small office environment where your ideas can have a big impact on a local community. This is an unpaid internship, other than the valuable experience gained and the occasional cup of coffee and pastry from Muddsuckers coffee.

Location: SE Como Neighborhood, Minneapolis at the offices of SECIA
