All happening at the Cookout- murals, health screenings, arm wrestling, herb workshop and other skillshares

Here is more information about the activities that are happening either in or alongside the  Como Cookout. More reasons to join the neighborhood at Van Cleve Park on September 16th, 2-5 pm.

::Volunteer at the Como Cookout on Sun Sept. 16th
Volunteers are needed to make this fun event happen! All volunteers get a meal and

::Gateway Mural painting begins / Painting during the Como Cookout
After a year full of applications, community meetings, design workshops, and events; it is now time to start painting the Gateway Mural and we are looking for your help! Sign up to help us September 15th,16th (during the Como Cookout!), 22nd and 23rd here (http://bit.ly/PkkZJS) or by contacting us at gatewaymuralproject@gmail.com.

::Free health screenings at the Como Cookout
Hosted by Allina Neighborhood Health Connection™ and Southeast Seniors, Living at Home/Block Nurse Program September 16, 2012 at the Como Cookout from 2-5pm. Knowledge is power. Join us at the free health screening, you will learn important information about key health indicators, such as blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar levels, BMI and more. You will have a chance to talk about health issues, discuss healthy behaviors and learn about community health resources. Be sure to wear comfortable clothes to the screening. For more comprehensive cholesterol testing, please avoid eating high saturated fats, refined sugars and alcoholic beverages for 48 hours prior to the screening. *Screenings available to adults and children 10-17 with parental consent.* Visit NeighborhoodHealthConnection.org to learn more about this innovative new program.

::Herb Preservation workshop at the Como Cookout
Como Green Village and the NE/SE Local Food Resource Hub bring a Food Preservation Workshop Series to SE Minneapolis! The Como Green Village is hosting a Food Preservation Workshop series funded by Allina Neighborhood Health Connection™. The 'Herb Preservation' session will teach various techniques of drying, freezing, making vinegars and salts out of garden grown herbs. The 'Tomato Products' canning class will cover basic sauce and salsa making, using both demonstration and hands-on learning in small groups. Register here Classes remaining in the series:

  • 'Tomato Products' Saturday, September 22, 10am – 1pm at University Lutheran Church of Hope, at 601 13th Ave SE, 55414 in the basement kitchen next to the Fellowship Hall

::NE/SE Food Hub Potluck with SkillShares alongside the Como Cookout
Alongside the Como Cookout this weekend there will be a potluck for the NE/SE Local Food Resource Hub. On 9/16/2012 from 2-5pm there will be a number of food growing & preserving SkillShares at the potluck. SkillShares are open to all.

::Como Cookout Novice Armwrestling Tournament!
Weigh-ins/registration 2:00pm-2:30pm, Start time 3pm. FREE TO ENTER!!!

There are no set weight classes at this tournament, but participants will be split into 3 groups, light, middle, and heavy, after everyone signs up and weighs in. Women are welcome too and will be in their own group (one group for women). There will also be 2 kids classes, small and big, boys and girls will be together. This is right and left handed for kids and adults.
This is novice only, no pro's will be allowed to enter, if any amateur's or pro's would like to do a supermatch with another amateur/pro, let me know asap and I will try to set it up. If you are unsure if you're eligible for novice, post on the event page or shoot me a message. If you're borderline novice/not novice, I may let you pull novice but put you up a weight class.
